Is he interested in me or not?

I have known him for ages. I split with my boyfriend 3 weeks ago after a long and turbulent relationship. I confided in him and he was great at listening and offering advice. He told me I was too good for him. Before I actually left my ex boyfriend he kept asking if it was over for good. He asked everytime I saw him. I saw him briefly last week and he again asked the same question so I said it wasn;t over yet and his face fell to the floor with a look of severe disappointment. I only did this to see his reaction and then said of course it's over! Is this a sign he likes me and should I just ask him out to save him doing it as he is very very shy. What do you think?
